Display—Project a hologram on your desktop

Remember that iconic moment in Star Wars—A New Hope when R2D2 projects a tiny hologram of Princess Leia and captivates young Luke Skywalker on an adventure that will carry him across the galaxy. Well, technology that can do much the same thing (project a hologram on your desktop; not carry you across the galaxy) is close at hand.

While the version of his holographic device is room-sized, the next generation known as the Mark III is expected to fit on your desktop running on a PC priced at a level that a hardcore gamer or, say, a medical professional can afford.
Meanwhile home entertainment continues its march onward to offer a theatre like experience. A software program called Pluribus lets you hook up many projectors to create a larger image than any one of them could project on its own. It lets you have a movie theatre like experience at home for an eighth of the cost of a conventional system. The great thing about this new system is the speed with which it automatically configures the projectors to create a larger image.
