Bilcare builds on nanotech to counter drug counterfeiting

Pune-based pharma packaging company Bilcare Research has launched a product to help check the menace of counterfeit drugs. The product has a label with a unique bar code made out of nanotechnology and fingerprinting.
The customer has to swipe the drug packet in the scanner or at select ATMs to verify the authenticity of the drug. MNC pharma major Pfizer vice-president John L LaMattina was also present at the function, which was attended by former president APJ Abdul Kalam.

Relaunched of Kerala lottery with hologram

KOCHI: Kerala State Government is going to relaunched lottery in December. The re-launch was part of the ongoing efforts to make the public aware of the illegal activities in the lottery scene. According to sources “The Finance Department has issue advertisements in the media highlighting the illegal route being adopted by some lottery operators in the State”. The Officials said there was delay in release of prize money for Kerala lottery. A hologram seal would be printed on each lottery to speed up the process of prize allotment.
The automation would help in providing the prizes across the counter itself. C-DIT has been entrusted with the task of publishing the lottery tickets with hologram seal, he said.

International fake currency racked busted

Sunday August 26 2007 12:20, HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad busted an est-ever haul of fake currency in the city — Rs 2.36 crore — and arrested four persons, including a UAE national. Already, the accused are believed to have circulated about Rs 17 lakh in the city. The Rs 500 and 1,000 denomination notes were printed in Pakistan and were sent in containers by ship via Dubai to Mumbai.
Disclosing details at a press conference on Saturday, Hyderabad Police Commissioner Balwinder Singh said the entire gang comprised at least 13 persons, including three from Pakistan. ‘‘The first consignment amounting to Rs 19 lakh in bogus currency arrived in the city in April, the second of Rs 55 lakh shortly thereafter. The third consignment reached the city a few days ago,’’ Singh added. The UAE national, Alkaz Khamis, was operating from Dubai through a front company, West India Import-Export.



Indian pharma market will be of $20 bn by 2015: McKinsey

among all spending categories. Present India pharmaceutical market was estimated at $6.3 billion in 2005. It is expected to touch $20 billion by 2015, with an compounded annual growth rate of 12.3 per cent, the study said. Between 2000 and 2005, the pharma market witnessed a growth rate of 9 per cent. As per sources “ In terms of scale, Indian pharmaceutical market, which is ranked 14th in the world, would be among top 10 by 2015 in the world overtaking Brazil, Mexico, South Korea and Turkey”. The incremental growth of USD 14 billion over the next decade is likely to be the third largest among all markets.

Man held for piracy, 3,000 discs seized

14th August, 2007, NAGPUR: The city police’s crime branch seized 3,000 pirated DVDs and CDs from a flat in Vaishali Nagar area and arrested one person in that connection. According to the police officials the accused has been booked under different provisions of the Copyright Act.
According to Hologram manufacturers association of India statistics report on piracy this is the fifth case within 2 months.

Book piracy racket busted

Ranchi, Aug. 10: In a first operation of its kind, police here raided six different buildings in the state capital and recovered “pirated” text books and “guides” valued at several crores. Six people were also arrested.
In a gross violation of intellectual property rights, the “pirates” printed popular books published by NCERT, Bharati Bhavan, S. Chand, Oxford University Press among other publishers. Poor quality paper, shoddy printing and missing chapters marked the pirated editions. They also did not have the publishers’ hologram. Priced lower than the original, they are, however, lapped up by buyers, among them students and parents.

Swiss-Indian move to combat counterfeiting

Tuesday, 07th August 2007 : India and Switzerland has signed a memorandum of understanding on safeguarding the intellectual property rights. The MoU is signed by Union Commerce & Industry minister Kamal Nath & Federal councillor of Swiss Federation Confederation’s Department of Economic affairs Doris Leuthard.
The agreement envisages setting up of a joint committe to develope a dialogue on Intellectual Propoert Right.
The memorandum of understanding, which was signed in New Delhi on Tuesday, establishes a working group to prevent the production, distribution and sale of counterfeit products, according to an economics ministry statement.

Technocrat president gets science museum in his honour

kalam.jpgAs President APJ Abdul Kalam prepares to demit office, his scientist friends have come together to start a museum that showcases his contribution to India’s space development and also has a silhouette of his famous mane as its logo.The Mission of Life Museum in the Capital’s cantonment area is the brainchild of Kalam’s friend and Managing Director of BrahMos Aerospace Pvt Ltd, A Sivathanu Pillai.
Through Kalam’s achievements, the museum also highlights the country’s milestones in rocketry, space and missile technology using 3-D holography and even a simulated nuclear explosion.

Kalam himself inaugurated the museum last month. He has donated his original Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan awards, his 27 doctorates apart from numerous other awards to it. Several dozen mementos and gifts Kalam received during his presidency and earlier are also featured. Besides, the president’s personal ‘Rudraveena’ and Mahatma Gandhi’s marksheet, which was gifted to him by the father of nation’s old school in Gujarat, are there too.
