Nokia and Intel researching 3D hologram for cell phones

27 08 2010

OULU, Finland, Aug. 24, 2010 – Intel Corporation, Nokia and the University of Oulu officially opened the Intel and Nokia Joint Innovation Center today. It will employ about two dozen R&D professionals and become the latest member of Intel’s European Research Network, Intel Labs Europe.

Initially the lab will conduct research for new and compelling mobile user experiences that could leverage the rapidly increasing capabilities of mobile devices. Creating interfaces that are more similar to interactions in the real world can enable experiences that are more natural and intuitive, in the same way that modern games and movies are more immersive through the use of realistic 3-D graphics.

The new lab is well aligned with the MeeGo open source platform recently launched by Intel and Nokia. MeeGo provides the greatest flexibility for developing new 3-D experiences on mobile devices as much of the lab’s research activity will also be open source.

“The University of Oulu’s focus on future telecommunications solutions as well as electronics and photonics made it the perfect location for the Intel and Nokia Joint Innovation Center,” says Justin Rattner, Intel chief technology officer and director of Intel Labs.

Another potential area of research could look into technologies that allow displaying a 3-D hologram of the person you are talking to on the phone, a capability only found in science fiction movies today. Consumers will feel more involved and engaged with their mobile experience than with current methods.

HoloSecure Card of Light logics grabs attention at Asian Professional Security Conference, Singapore

6 10 2009

HoloSecure Card, a highly durable and new generation ID device, developed by Light Logics, a Technopark, Trivandrum based firm, received much attention in the 16th Asian Professional International Security Conference held on September 30, 2009 at Singapore Suntec International Convention Centre. Special Theme of this premier international event with great contemporary importance to the region is Regional Cooperation in Combating Crime and Terrorism. One of the two keynote addresses of the event was on the HoloDecure ID device developed by the Light Logics.

In his speech Dr. Ajith Kumar, President and Leading Specialist of Light Logics Holography and Optics and Light Logics International, UAE, presented a technological exposition of this new generation ID card that has much relevance as a highly durable ID device that can be effectively used as digital passport, a citizen ID or in the global fight against terrorism and fraudulence. The card has all the features of the trendy smart card and at the same time holds a holographic chip with high density optical information content. But, in sharp deviation from conventional plastic ID cards with embossed security holograms, the HoloSecure card itself is a hologram with metallic structure and has multilevel security features.

TSSI buys hologram patents from Ver-tec

2 10 2009

23 September 2009: TSSI has acquired a portfolio of patents for specialist volume and true colour holograms including Biometrigram and HD-3D hologram patents from authentication security technology and consultancy firm Ver-tec.
The move follows the recent launch of TSSI’s Magnetics Solutions Division, which aims to drive growth across TSSI’s document security and brand protection products.
According to TSSI, counterfeiters are becoming increasingly sophisticated, producing highly realistic ID documents. Additional security measures are therefore required to provide the highest level of protection possible and ensure that ID documents such as passports, ID cards and access cards cannot be replicated. Hologram technology provides an effective security solution for all identity documents as each hologram is unique making it impossible to imitate.
HD-3D is a true colour hologram, meaning the images always maintain their original colours from any viewing angle, unlike embossed holograms which exhibit a rainbow effect. Each hologram is unique with different serial numbers and/or bar codes, which can also be encrypted for added security.
The Biometrigram, a volume hologram, can store multiple biometrics as well as analogue images and encrypted digital information. TSSI says these have a higher information density than electronic chips so are ideal for use on ID cards. Each hologram is unique so ensures the correct identity of the document holder and provides an effective security measure in the fight against identity fraud.
“The acquisition of HD-3D and Biometrigram follows the recent launch of our new Magnetics Solutions Division,” says Danny Chapchal, executive chairman, TSSI Systems. “Both of these products are a welcome addition to our portfolio of identity and document security offerings. Our customers want top quality security solutions and these new patents will meet this increased demand for fraud proof identity documents.”
“The creation of the Magnetics Solutions Division and the acquisition of Ver-tec patents along with our back to basics approach regarding contract coating sees us turning a corner,” says Ian Elver, Business Development director, TSSI. “It positions us as a serious contender in the supply of products to help fight counterfeiting and fraud.”

United States: AC awarded grant

5 11 2008

Description Amarillo College received a College Cost and Reduction Act grant Oct. 1. For the next two years, AC will receive 50.2 percent of $1.6 million a year as the fiscal agent for New Mexico Tech. The grant was created and proposed to the Department of Education to help fund faculty development initiatives for physics, aerospace engineering and non-destructive testing and evaluations.

NMT, a consistently nationally acknowledged four-year science, technology, engineering and medical school in Socorro, N.M., pursued a cooperative arrangement with AC to work together to create the CCRA grant.

Negotiations between the Department of Education and representatives of NMT and AC finally led to the approved grant. “The money will allow us to do some cutting-edge things such as using Teleportec Hologram (3-D) video conferencing,” said Danita McAnally, dean of assessment and development.

Professionals from NMT and AC will train together and team-teach classes from a distance using the technology bought with the CCRA grant money.

According to Corbin Ball Associates’ informational Web site about the “Next Generation of Video Conferencing,” students would be able to see a simulated, full-size, three-dimensional, color, beating heart and use virtual scalpels to perform heart surgery with the look and the tactile feel as if he or she actually were performing the operation.

Similarly, STEM students at NMT will be able to visualize the three-dimensional materials that AC faculty work with.”We designed this grant to directly affect STEM students, and now the use of this futuristic new technology will aid in the comprehension of the students in those fields,” McAnally said.

“Not only will the content of the education be available for more students at a lower cost, but equipment to aid in the education will be bought and available to those students.”

Because of the region’s growing industry for STEM graduates, both NMT and AC see the need to create opportunities and “use the available technology to get back to learning and serving the needs of our students,” McAnally said.

“AC is receiving almost $1 million for equipment for non-destructive testing and evaluations alone,” she said.A desired effect of the cooperative CCRA arrangement is to improve the existing relationships between science and engineering faculty members at both NMT and AC and to “increase cost-effectiveness through resource sharing and collaboration,” according to the grant’s abstract budget created by the Department of Education. With the improved relationship, students will have an easier attainable opportunity to earn a two-year degree at AC, transfer and graduate with another degree from NMT.

Dangerous Fakes: Computer Counterfeiting

11 10 2008

Dangerous FakesHow counterfeit, defective computer components from China are getting into U.S. warplanes and ships

The American military faces a growing threat of potentially fatal equipment failure—and even foreign espionage—because of counterfeit computer components used in warplanes, ships, and communication networks. Fake microchips flow from unruly bazaars in rural China to dubious kitchen-table brokers in the U.S. and into complex weapons. Senior Pentagon officials publicly play down the danger, but government documents, as well as interviews with insiders, suggest possible connections between phony parts and breakdowns.
